Homeopathy is a system of medicine discovered by a German allopathic physician, Dr. Christian Friedrich Samuel Hahnemann in 1790. The name “Allopathy” was coined by him. He was not satisfied with the allopathic treatment and he quit his practice and did translation work of books for his living.
One day while translating a book named “Treatise of the Materia Medica by William Cullen”, he found out that Cinchona bark which was used by allopathy to treat malaria is capable of producing the same symptoms of malaria like chills, rigor, etc., in healthy human beings. He then started experimenting with various drugs on himself and his family members and found out that many drugs used in the treatment of diseases are capable of producing the same symptoms of disease when given to healthy human beings.
Principle of Homeopathy:
The basic fundamental principle of the homeopathic system of medicine is “similia similibus curantur” which means “let likes be cured by likes”. This principle is being criticized by those who didn’t understand it properly. The basic concept behind this principle is “Primary action and Secondary action”.
If we take any drug in crude large doses, it will produce its effect on our body which is shown by us in the form of signs and symptoms. After a while, the body reacts to those primary actions of the drug by producing an opposite set of symptoms. This opposite reaction is called secondary action. Homeopathic medicine cures by this secondary action of drugs.
For example, Croton tiglium is a plant well known for its purgative action. It produces diarrhea within five minutes of its ingestion in a spoonful of its crude form. But when given in minute small doses it is capable of curing diarrhea.
Why minute doses?
In his initial days of practice, Dr. Hahnemann used drugs in large doses. But his patients had severe aggravations from the primary action of drugs before the cure. So he started reducing the quantity of the drug by adding it to a vehicle of no medicinal power like water and sugar of milk.
These small quantities of drugs are prepared by proper scales and this process is called potentization and homeopathic medicines are available in various potencies. The potency of medicine is selected based on various factors of the patient and disease. One such factor is the sensitivity of the patient. It is considered and the medicine is given to avoid any aggravation by the primary action of the drug and also to cure him by the secondary action of the drug.
Minute doses are also used to make poisonous drugs safe.
Criticism against minute doses:
The criticism against smaller doses is because of many homeopaths use higher potencies beyond Avogadro's number. Richard Hughes, a pioneer of homeopathy criticized these homeopaths. According to him, similarity should be established between the drug pathogenesy and disease pathogenesis. He advocated low potency prescription, pragmatic, antimystical Homoeopathy and followed the 4th edition of Organon of Medicine.
More stress on pathology, drug proving on animals, etc were the main features of his philosophy. He was respected in the homeopathic and allopathic fraternities. He said that, “It is necessary to understand the pathology created by the remedies on the organic level and it is the pathology level which has to be treated”. Dr. Hughes referred Hahnemann as the father of experimental pharmacology. Homeopathy is effective when the right medicine is given in the right potency.
Also, homeopathy doesn’t use only potentized medicines. It also uses crude drugs which are not harmful in large doses, eg. Ocimum sanctum, Alfa alfa, Avena sativa, etc.
Arnold Schultz law and Hormesis:
In modern science, hormesis (“to excite”) can be defined as the biphasic dose-response relationship in which a chemical exerts opposite effects depending on the dose, high doses being toxic, the low doses have the opposite effect.
Although the term “hormesis” was coined only in 1943 by Southam and Erlich; the phenomenon according to which weak concentrations of chemicals (or biological agents) stimulate, medium concentrations depress, and high concentrations halt or destroy physiological or cellular activity had already been known for at least a century as the “Arndt-Schultz law,” which is a recognized law in the medical dictionaries. This law is universal.
Hans Peter Durr, director at the Max-Planck-Institute of Physics (Werner-Heisenberg-Institute) and professor of physics at the Ludwig Maximilian University explains, “Modern quantum physics reveals that matter is not composed of matter, but in reality is merely its potentiality.” This is also in
accordance with the homeopathic system of medicine.
Theory of miasm:
The theory of miasm is equivalent to the germ theory of modern science, at least in infectious diseases. Dr. Hahnemann has held the invisible living creatures as the cause of cholera referring them as cholera miasm. Naturally, minute organisms have been referred to as miasm.
I personally want some kind of reconciliation between allopathy and homeopathy for the sake of humanity and the patient should receive any treatment that can help him in a better way.
Also, take a look at some of these crazy ideas that prevail today used by quacks who call themselves homeopaths. Do these notions have anything to do with the clear scientific principles set out by Hahnemann? Definitely not.
— pendulums to find the correct remedy;
— remedies that are written down on a piece of paper and then become potentized when you place a glass of water over them;
— remedy selection by astrology;
— remedy selection by tarot;
— remedy selection by the color or design of the outfit of the patient;
— asking the patient his favorite color and then selecting a remedy based on this;
— multi-remedy (complex) prescriptions for specific pathologies, where the individual symptoms are ignored
— cease therapy, a form of homeopathy using the causative substances themselves in homeopathic preparation, not the individual symptoms;
— detox homeopathy, using high potencies of different remedies without considering the individual symptoms;
— predictive homeopathy;
— provings of music, so this music will be used to cure the patient;
— remedies that are given via cell phone ringtones;
— remedies that are given according to the likes of a bird
— provings of color
— certain ‘teachers’ claim that there is no need for the remedies to be ‘proved’ on humans, but instead the symptoms of a remedy can simply be imagined – hundreds of ‘imaginative’ homeopaths can ‘imagine’ hundreds of different ‘provings’ for the same remedy;
— provings of remedies that are incomplete, with emphasis on the peculiar mind or emotional symptoms and scarce or no physical symptoms;
— remedy given according to sensation and delusion – believing it is not necessary to take the whole case;
–remedies prescribed according to the doctrine of signatures: e.g. dog’s milk for barking cough, nutmeg remedy for brain disorders as nutmeg looks like a brain;
— Berlin Wall remedy for those who want to avoid divorce;
— some ‘homeopaths’ proclaim that the indicated remedy is spoken to them by God;
— discarding the use of repertories altogether (a key reference book listing all physical, mental, and emotional symptoms that have appeared from complete and detailed provings);
— remedy selection by the periodic table and the imaginary synthesis of symptoms by the imagination ;
— usage of a special (electro/radionic) device that can reprint information about a remedy from numbers onto plain sugar granules;
— usage of a special (electro/radionic) device that can reprint information from a photograph or personal object of a patient onto plain sugar granules;
— remedy selection only by the leading miasm (psoric, syphilitic, sycotic, etc);
— some ‘homeopaths’ claim that they can send the remedy by etheric waves to the patient;
— some others claim that they do not even need to give the remedy, they just have to think about it and the patient is cured;
— others suggest prescribing only according to mental symptoms;
— some others claim that we can give someone a remedy today and it will protect him/her from a prospective epidemic (homeoprophylaxis);
— some homeopaths use a bioresonance device and Voll method for ‘finding’ the remedy, not by analysis and repertorisation;
and so on and so forth.
